For years, DOOM promised new projects that floated in the ether and then never materialized: The Madvillainy follow-up, the collaborative album with Ghostface Killah, the track-a-week series for Adult Swim. His own collaborators and record-label bosses didn’t know when he might pop up. But then again, MF DOOM’s presence had always been defined, at least in part, by absence.ĭOOM moved in mystery. By the time Playboi Carti yelped his name, MF DOOM was an absence. DOOM had slipped out of the world, unnoticed. DOOM’s widow kept the news secret for two months before announcing it. Daniel Dumile, the rapper who’d spent two decades under the mask, had died on Halloween. We learned a week later, on New Year’s Eve. But MF DOOM didn’t think about Playboi Carti’s line at all. I spent about a half-second idly considering what DOOM might have thought of that little homage. It was because Playboi Carti, the Atlanta trap mutant, slid an unexpected DOOM namecheck into the guttural throwdown “Stop Breathing”: “Brand new Ventador, I drove that bitch right to the moon/ I just hit a lick with a mask, MF DOOM.” DOOM is a revered touchpoint for entire generations of rappers, but it was still an out-of-nowhere thrill to hear someone like Carti - a rapper with absolutely no stylistic connection to DOOM - using the masked elder as a reference point. It wasn’t directly because of anything DOOM did. It’s also a nice reminder of how great DOOM can be.On Christmas Day, MF DOOM’s name trended on Twitter. There is no real resolution in the battle between our hero and villain, but, really, does it matter? This is classic hip hop and it’s obvious all of them are having fun. As Czarface notes in ‘Astral Training,’ his powers are ‘incredible and astonishing,’ whereas DOOM’s are, as he notes, ‘mental.’ You see, every hero (which is Czarface) needs a villain and, of course, DOOM is the masked super villain. Czarface’s mask is metal, and causes him to be a close talker, when he meets DOOM he has the perfect pitch for him.
The album tells the story of how Czarface met DOOM. And Inspector Deck, DOOM, and Esoteric are all on point here. The beats are vintage DOOM, or are they vintage 7L & Esoteric? Big fat basslines, crisp beats, they have a root in the so-called Golden Age of Hip Hop, but are kept relevant with the flourishes and samples. So when Czarface meets DOOM, we get brilliant underground hip hop. Czarface, according to Esoteric, is a character representing all three members of the supergroup. Czarface’s last album, 2017’s First Weapon Drawn, tells the origin story of Czarface, who is a wrestling superstar, and offered a mask to save his life and find greatness (Ghostface could relate to this, with his variable origin story for his alter ego, Tony Starks). Like DOOM, Czarface exists in the hip hop underground and makes comics-inspired music. One of the most prolific rappers in the hip hip underground, DOOM bridges the gap between the underground and mainstream through his frequent collaborators, most notably with Ghostface from Wu-Tang Clan.Ĭzarface is a collaboration between another member of the Wu-Tang, Inspectah Deck and Boston’s 7L & Esoteric. When MF DOOM is on and dialled in, I don’t think there’s a greater rapper out there His lyrics are deft, subtle, and often funny.
